IMHO, it is important to get function first as it force you to learn metallurgy better. Form is a matter of practice and getting the feel of your hands to your tools to your steel. You're on the right...

Light consistency is extremely important. I never forge outside even if it's during a heat wave. It's hard to judge the color while in the forge and even tougher outside in the sun while hammering....

Unfortunately my only choice is to forge outdoors.   WHen finances allow I will build an enclosure for my smithy...until then I will limit my forging activities till late afternoon and early evening...

Is the chipping really chipping or is it cracks? If its chipping and it wasn't there when you sharpened it could possible the temper. The blades is still a little to hard. You can do a brass rod test...

brass rod test is were you work the edge down thin and sharpened then flex it across a brass rod by applying pressure to the blade edge on both sides of the rod. Keeping the blade flexed you roll it...

Well it passes the brass rod test.   I tested 7 spots along the edge twice and the blade definitely flexed and went back to straight.    No additional chipping and no distortion of the edge so I will...
